History
Newton Square traces its history almost as far back as that of our country. There are five sites in Newton Square listed on the National Register of Historic Places. They include Square Tavern, Hood Octagonal School, Paper Mill House, Old St. David’s Church, and Bartram’s Covered Bridge. Today, Newton Square showcases modern houses and large estates accented by quaint historic homes.
Newton Square’s history began as a crossroads where Quakers would pass on their way to Meeting. In the late 1600s, enough of these Welsh “Friends” lived locally and began meeting in the town. Eventually, in 1711, construction was completed on the Newton Friends Meetinghouse. In these early days, Newton Square served as a farming community with eventually a Blacksmith and Wheelwright shop being built. In the 19th Century, a variety of mills began to spring up along Darby Creek and Crum Creek, and along with them tenement housing and stores to serve the mill workers.
In the 1860’s, as railway lines extended out of Philadelphia, Newton Square was not included in those paths. While this stunted the growth of the area, several prominent hunt clubs were established in and around Newton Square, making it a popular destination for rich Philadelphians and country gentlemen. Many large estates began being constructed in the rolling hills of the area. By the 1890’s, electrified trolley service was available in the community.
Today, Newtown Square is a family focused community with opportunities for youth baseball, soccer and lacrosse. The community features senior programs and children’s reading programs. Assets like their own library and township building keep the independent spirit of the area, with neighborhood parks maintaining that small-town feel. Newton Square is home to small business and major corporations like SAP and Sunoco. A far cry from the simple crossroads it once was, Newton Square is a terrific place to call home.

History
If you travel nine miles west from the center of Philadelphia, you’ll come to the community of Havertown, which is an unincorporated area of the Haverford Township. Founded in 1681 by Welsh Quakers, Havertown boasts a rich history. Home to an assortment of attractions and historical landmarks, including the Grange Estate, Havertown is well known for entertaining famous guests over the years, including George Washington. It was during the War of 1812 that the United States turned to Nitre Hall, a manufacturing facility in Havertown, for 800,000 pounds of gunpowder.
Havertown: Popular for Irish-Americans
Havertown has always been home to many Irish-Americans. In fact, the US Census has ranked Havertown as one of the top municipalities in the country for percentage of population with Irish ancestry. Because of its high number of Irish-Americans, the town has always featured and continues to feature a large number of Irish pubs and shops. Due to its rich association with Irish-Americans, many Irish immigrants flock to this town.
Making Progress in Havertown
The area made much progress through the second decade of the 20th Century by focusing on agriculture. Early settlers also ran mills as a source of income. It was in 1898 that the Philadelphia and West Chester Turnpike Company developed the toll road that goes through the town. With the addition of the Ardmore line at the turn of the 20th century came much new housing. Between the years 1900 to 1925, the population of Havertown almost doubled. There are many mansions and developed gardens in Havertown, with several still standing today.
Schools and Golfing in Havertown
Over the years, there have been many golf courses developed in Havertown, including the Merion Cricket Club Golf Association, the Pennsylvania Railroad Golf Club, and the Llanerch Country Club. In relation to schools, the first one built in Havertown was in 1797. Four more schools were built during the 1800s, and it wasn’t until the latter part of the 19th Century that the present school system started to be developed. As of today, there are four private schools found in the Haverford Township, along with four parochial schools, one middle school, one high school, and five elementary schools.

History of Glen Mills
Though neither of the two paper mills that were the genesis of the “Glen Mills” name are in operation today, there are many historical attractions left for visitors and residents to visit, including Cheyney University, The Nicklin-Trimble House, and Malvern’s Historic Sugartown.
Ironworks and Rail History
The American Revolution proved to be a mix blessing for those living in the Glen Mills area. Many men who worked as iron masters benefited from the high demand for manufactured cannons, munitions, etc. However, British troops eventually destroyed the ironworks. It wasn’t until 1858 that the West Chester and Philadelphia Railroad came to Glen Mills, and it was thanks to this train service that major progress started to take place within the community. In fact, up until 1986, there were regular passenger trains that ran through the town. Trains still operate on the weekends between West Chester and Glen Mills.
The Longhorn Ranch Restaurant in Glen Mills
In the 1960’s, The Longhorn Ranch restaurant was in operation, which doubled as its very own "wild west" roadside attraction. Once the ’80’s came around, the restaurant was transformed into a nightclub. As of today, the site features a retirement community.

Well known for the Golf Course at Glen Mills, which was created by Bobby Weed, the community uses this course to train students in golf as well as provide schooling on turf management.
