History of Glen Mills
Though neither of the two paper mills that were the genesis of the “Glen Mills” name are in operation today, there are many historical attractions left for visitors and residents to visit, including Cheyney University, The Nicklin-Trimble House, and Malvern’s Historic Sugartown.
Ironworks and Rail History
The American Revolution proved to be a mix blessing for those living in the Glen Mills area. Many men who worked as iron masters benefited from the high demand for manufactured cannons, munitions, etc. However, British troops eventually destroyed the ironworks. It wasn’t until 1858 that the West Chester and Philadelphia Railroad came to Glen Mills, and it was thanks to this train service that major progress started to take place within the community. In fact, up until 1986, there were regular passenger trains that ran through the town. Trains still operate on the weekends between West Chester and Glen Mills.
The Longhorn Ranch Restaurant in Glen Mills
In the 1960’s, The Longhorn Ranch restaurant was in operation, which doubled as its very own "wild west" roadside attraction. Once the ’80’s came around, the restaurant was transformed into a nightclub. As of today, the site features a retirement community.
Golf Course at Glen Mills
Well known for the Golf Course at Glen Mills, which was created by Bobby Weed, the community uses this course to train students in golf as well as provide schooling on turf management.
